ANGEL FALLS
When her best friend is killed, leaving Regina da Silva with her young child, Brooks Anderson is sent to bring the child to the U.S. Circumstances bring them together in Brazil, where Regina and Brooks are pursued by a killer while protecting the orphaned baby. As the danger heightens, so does their attraction. They've both been broken by violent pasts, but while Regina relies on her faith, Brooks has turned away from God. Will they realize their true feelings for each other when their pursuer strives to keep them apart forever?
My Review:
published in 2013 by Abingdon Press
My thanks to my public library for keeping me in retro reads!
Intense. Gritty. Definitely edgy. This debut romantic suspense pushes boundaries even as it delivers a riveting read. Some aspects of this book aren't for the faint of heart. There's plenty of action and violence and even some of the romantic scenes are more detailed than I'm used to seeing in a Christian Fiction novel -- so it might not be for every reader. It is in no way explicit or inappropriate but definitely a wee bit edgier.
And what a desperate story this is! Regina, with her heartbreaking past and her commitment to care for the orphans and street children in the ghettos of her city. She walks with God, but even so, she is held captive by her abusive history. Her goal is to protect other children from living the horrors she has.
Brooks is all simmering rage and hard edges. A tough soldier who has been betrayed and can't let it go. He's not particularly likable when we first meet him. Very self-centered and bitter, nursing his wounds -- both physical and emotional -- and not in the healthiest of ways. He tries to mask it, but there's a decent and compassionate heart under that brusque exterior and it comes to the surface when Regina and little Eduardo are threatened.
Action-packed, nail-biting scenes collide into one another as Mann takes this hero and heroine -- and her readers -- on a breathtaking race to the finish line.

I wondered about this author and her books. Sounds like these wouldn't really be my cup of tea. Always appreciate your Christian view on a book and letting us know when the content may not be something we like. :-)
ReplyDeleteI hate to discourage someone from trying this book but I didn't want to not mention those aspects that are edgier either. It's not way over the top but definitely leaning more mainstread, I think.
DeleteLike I've always said, not every book appeals to every reader. It's a matter of personal choice :-) Just because I may not like it, doesn't mean someone else won't find it the best book they've ever read. I'm all for diversity in books! I'm glad there are so many books out there to choose from. And I would never criticize an author, that's just bad form in my opinion.
DeletePersonally, I'm glad you mention stuff like this in your reviews. It helps me decide whether to try a book or not. Because I know I may be a pickier reader than some other folks & that's okay :-)
I think we gravitate to the same reader comfort zone, Trixi. :-)
DeleteI'm up for almost any book there a few I don't read because of content but this sounds good. cheetahthecat1986ATgmailDOTcom
ReplyDeleteI'm a rather adventurous reader as well. And the content in this book doesn't cross any lines though it does stand at the very edge in places -- just my opinion. Good luck, Kim.
DeleteI like debut novels it tells me once I read it weather the author will be a good read or not.
DeleteSounds exciting! Thank you for a great review, Kav! mauback55 at gmail dot com
ReplyDeleteIt's definitely exciting! Good luck, Melanie.
DeleteI've read a couple of her most recent books and enjoyed them. I actually own this book, but haven't read it yet. I'm wondering if it's any more intense than the ones I've read? If it's of the same calibre, I should be fine. They were intense, but they didn't bother me or cross any hard lines. Have you read any of her more recent books? My only thought on those were the light or nearly absent faith threads.
ReplyDeleteThis is the first book I've read by Connie Mann so I can't make a comparison. I plan to read more though. I don't want to say too much more for fear of posting spoilers.
Delete"ANGEL FALLS" sounds like the type of book that would keep me up all night reading. Thank you for your review and bring this book to our attention. I'd very much love the opportunity to read it. Thanks for the chance to win a copy.
