PINT OF NO RETURN
The first in a new dessert cozy mystery series! A murder in town is bound to shake things up...
After her divorce from her thrice-married embezzler husband, Trinidad Jones is finally ready for a fresh start. So when she's left one of her ex's businesses in Upper Sprocket, Oregon, she decides to pack up her dog, cash in her settlement, and open her dream business: the Shimmy and Shake Shop, introducing the world to her monster milkshakes. And even with a couple of sticky situations underway, namely that the other two ex-wives also call Sprocket home, Trinidad's life seems to be churning along smoothly.
That is, until she discovers her neighbor, the Popcorn King, head down in his giant popcorn kettle. When one of Trinidad's fellow ex-wives is accused of the murder and Upper Sprocket descends into mayhem, it's going to take a supersized scoop of courage to flush out the killer.
My Review:
Me the whole read through: Bwahahaha! Snort!! Guffaw!!! And repeat.
Clever and funny and brilliantly choreographed. The town in all it's quirky glory provides the perfect backdrop to the chaos and mayhem that has become Trinidad's life.
Love the starting over theme and the Shimmy and Shake Shop is more brilliance....though, warning, reading this book may induce ice cream cravings. :-) And the teenage twins Trinidad employs to help her set up her business are a hoot! Cue more laughter.
But the real star (and super sleuth) is Noodles. Move over countless cozy kitties, there's a spectacular canine ready to steal your thunder and take his place in cozy mystery history. Poor Noodles, he has some issues for all he's a devoted companion and they stem from being a therapy dog flunkee. :-)
The mystery is very clever and I like the way the author works in the amateur sleuthing angle and provides the heroine with a posse of new friends to help out, including a certain pecan farmer who I'm already head over heels for. Hopefully Trinidad is of like mind and there will be no dreaded love triangles to untangle.
Mentink brings her zany flare to a new mystery series that better have umpteen books in the works because I am already a super fan!
Oh -- and I listened to the audible edition narrated by Stephanie Nemeth-Parker. She has an amazing gift for giving each characters a unique voice, including accents. Made for a stellar listening experience.
