COLD CASE DOUBLE CROSS
They're on a cold trail and running out of time.
Convinced his brother was wrongly convicted of murder years ago, detective Cash Ryland's determined to find the real killer -- even if it puts him in the crosshairs. But he needs help from cold case investigator Mae Vogel, whom he mistreated in high school. Can they put their past aside to solve the murder...before the killer succeeds in silencing them for good?
A cold case investigators story
My Review:
I do so love a cold case mystery and this one is so well done. Mae's initial reluctance to get involved is both personal and professional. She has a bitter history with Cash and those kind of high school wounds can easily fester. So, not only does the closed-case-not-a-cold-case file make Cash's brother appear to be guilty, she really wants nothing to do with her teenage nemesis. That leaves Mae battling with her conscience as she struggles to look at the problem objectively.
Cash about tore my heart out. He's a changed man and so humble and accepting of Mae's inability to trust him. A difficult childhood and a unique personal struggle leave him feeling less than. I wanted to smack Mae upside the head for not giving him a chance, but, of course, I knew Chase's secret and she didn't for most of the book. And Mae had her own personal history that skewed the way she looked at Cash -- and all men, really. Gah, the tension between these two is both exhilarating and infuriating...and definitely kept me turning pages.
Great suspense -- with a number of potential suspects -- and the action really amps up once Mae officially turns the closed case into a cold case. Patch's diabolical mind has created some very cunning 'deterrents' and near death experiences for Mae and Cash which makes for a thrilling read.
I'm excited that this is part of a series and am anxiously looking forward to the Patch's next Cold Case Investigators installment.

ReplyDeleteStrange that none of fictional crime shows on TV are about cold cases. That would make a great series! Good luck, Lucy!
