FISHERS OF MENACE
Welcome to Banford, where townsfolk are family, tea is hot, and murder is inevitable...
Cassie Bridgestone's life is simple. Along with running her country decor shop, she loves to cuddle her cat, sip tea, attend church, and watch birds.
But then, things go awry.
First, the handsome but mysterious Daniel opens a bookstore in her building and challenges her to face long-buried feeling about her previous relationship.
Then, a friendly fishing tournament turns deadly and her friend is accused of murder, throwing Cassie's world into a tailspin she might never recover from.
Unless she finds the real killer.
But the folks in Banford have secrets. Secrets they'll do anything to protect, including bringing Cassie's life to a quick and surreptitious end.
My Review:
Seriously, how did I not know about this cozy mystery series set in Canada, written by a Canadian and full of inspirational content besides?! Just when I think I have all things cornered when it comes to Christian Fiction I am humbled by how much I have missed.
So, we have the usual cozy mystery tropes -- small town setting, unlucky-in-love hometown girl in the midst of recreating herself among friends and family. And there's a murder, of course which comes complete with an inept cop and since the prime suspect is one of Cassie's friends, what's a girl to do but turn to sleuthing?!
Love that Cassie is a bit of a sleuth bungler. She's a mystery reader, but discovers that interviewing potential suspects isn't as easy as the books make it seem. Finding the right questions to ask without alienating half the town is trickier than she thought it would be. And jumping to conclusions seems to be her forte. But her heart's in the right place and she has some great friends and a devoted bible study group who have her back.
And then there's Daniel...an unexpected bonus and complication in Cassie's life. Love how the author uses their burgeoning relationship to highlight some Christian principles that are easy to ignore when the thrill of attraction takes possession of an otherwise sensible heroine. Great characters growth and solid convictions.
And the mystery is just as rewarding. The author tosses us just enough red herrings to keep an armchair sleuth happily discombobulated for the duration of the read.
A cozy mystery centered around faith and friendship.
