The Rancher's Family Legacy

GIVEAWAY

JOHNSON, MYRA
THE RANCHER'S FAMILY LEGACY

A future he didn't want...could become the family he needs.

Building contractor Mark Caldwell is ready to inherit his grandfather's horse ranch and put his traumatic past behind him -- if he can survive working in Texas Hill Country for a year. But when his dog bonds with local caterer Holly Elliot's son, Mark can't refuse Holly's request to be her son's mentor. Can they put aside their differences long enough to open their hearts?

A Ranchers of Gabriel Bend novel

My Review:

What an emotional second chance romance! Because both Mark and Holly have lived through their own particular tragedies and romance is the last thing on their minds. She's a single mom to a son with health issues and he's still trying to figure out what putting the past behind him is supposed to look like. Their meet-cute is more of a meet-snipe and we go from there. :-)

Hands down, the star of the story is Mark's affable mutt, Shadow, who develops a special bond with Holly's son...which proves to be all kinds of useful including in the romance department. :-) Angsty and exasperating and toe-curling by turns. Love it when a hero and heroine keep me on my toes right to the very end!

This the final instalment to Myra Johnson's The Rancher's of Gabriel Bend series and I'll be sad to say goodbye to these characters and this loving ranching community. I appreciated the way previous heroes and heroines were worked into this story. Love getting an up close glimpse of their enduring happily ever afters!

Having said that, you could definitely read The Rancher's Family Legacy as a standalone...you'll just get an extra kick out of it if you've been in Gabriel Bend from the start.

Goal Update: #6 Stay current with a series

To Treasure an Heiress

GIVEAWAY

WHITE, ROSEANNA M. WHITE
TO TREASURE AN HEIRESS

Beth Tremayne has always been drawn to adventure. During her childhood, she fed that desire by exploring every loch of the Isles of Scilly. Now, after stumbling across an old collection of letters and a man buried on her family's property, she's found more adventure than she ever anticipated in the hunt for pirate treasure. But in order to discover where the slues lead, she must search alongside Lord Sheridan, a man she finds insufferable.

Sheridan has spent years pursuing whatever archaeological interests pique his imagination. And when he discovers that Beth's search connects with one of his far-removed pirate ancestors, he can't help getting involved. Plus, he finds her irresistible, even though she insists he stole a prized possession of hers.

As they work together following different clues and drawing closer to danger, they start to piece together a story of tragic love and piratical adventure. But which treasure will bring the greatest surprise -- the one they find in each other or the one just out of their reach?

My Review:

Buried pirate treasure, you say? That comes with island adventure along the Cornish coast? Action, excitement, danger....love?! Eeeeepppp, To Treasure an Heiress is the epitome of 'perfect summer read'. I really need to visit the Isles of Scilly and breathe in that tangy salt air, and see the sights for myself. Seriously, google it -- I've never seen so many shades of blue! Love when an author's descriptions breathe life into a place I've never been and send me on a travelogue research trip! And Roseanna M. White definitely does that here.

This is the second book in her Secrets of the Isles series and I definitely think it would be best to read the books in order. There's quite a bit of plot and character 'spill over' from The Nature of a Lady, as this story picks up where the first left off.

Beth is back home now, still gathering information on the notorious pirate who once lived on the island, still looking for the rest of that illusive treasure. But this time she's not doing it on her own. She has a 'posse' of helpers to add chaos and charm to the quest. Including one annoying Lord 'Arrogance Personified' Sheridan -- the enemies to more trope plays out beautifully here. A hysterically funny and touching and toe-curling delight.

And so much action and adventure! Treachery and danger! All tangled in a twisty-turny plot so I best issue a 'Paper Cut from Furious Page-Turning' warning. Might want to keep bandaids handy, along with your smelling salts and comfort chocolate. :-)

Super excited for Worthy of Legend to release in September -- it has a King Arthur tie-in. Double eeppppp!!!!

Goal Update: #5 Diversity my reading, #6 Stay current with a series

Survival

GIVEAWAY

HARRIS, LISA
SURVIVAL

Adventure-fueled fiction

He came back to Shadow Ridge to escape his past. Now the survival of the town depends on him facing his greatest fear.

In today's world, law enforcement agencies across the country rely on forensic tools, DNA testing and crime labs. But what if that technology was suddenly no longer no longer available? No one in the small, west Texas town of Shadow Ridge knows what took down the power grid, or when it's going to be back up, but everyone knows exactly where they were the moment it went down. An now, with no electricity, no internet, and no modern technology, the men and women responsible for keeping the town safe are going to have to learn how to fight crime all over again.

When one of the men in charge of storing food for the town of Shadow Ridge is found murdered execution style, it's up to Jace McQuaid to find the killer. What he discovers is a group of organized raiders who are stealing supplies and selling them on the black market -- and the survival of the town depends on stopping them.

Morgan Addison's estranged brother-in-law, shows up at her house demanding weapons and confirming her fear that he's part of the outlaws. Tensions are raised further when Ricky kidnaps her son to ensure safe passage out of town. Jace must find a way to save Noah and ensure the survival of Shadow Ridge.

My Review:

An adrenaline rush of a read! And a riveting start to Lisa Harris' new Dystopian-ish suspense series and I'm ready to dive into the third book (have already read the second...yes, this is me, reading a series out of order...again!)

Love the modern day Wild West vibe to this series. Law enforcement trying to keep the peace without all the technological tools we've become so reliant upon. It's a huge learning curve that makes it a struggle to keep up with bad guys... shudder, so many bad guys. But there are also plenty of stalwart Shadow Ridge citizens who have learned to work together for the greater good of the community.

So, this book starts out with an eye-popping opening scene and then fast forwards eight months, revealing a Dystopian world that's operating with a little bit of 21st century ingenuity and a whole lot of 19th century pioneer know-how. Completely fascinating!

And then there's a second chance romance for widowed Morgan and the town's reluctant sheriff, Jace McQuaid. Perfect set up for so much angst, and Harris does an amazing job of capturing the desperation and fear as the reality of their situation nearly overwhelms them. Phew -- I was living each moment with them from beginning to end!

Thankfully, the author relieves the tension with some incredible inspirational scenes that bring hope and comfort...once Jace is through wrestling with God over all the 'what ifs' and 'whys' that have been plaguing him.

Summed up in one word: Unputdownable!

Goal Update: #1 Read more indie authors (hybrid author), #2 Catch up on a series I'm behind in

Free Fall

GIVEAWAY

MEHL, NANCY
FREE FALL

Someone has been abducting women with long dark hair across Virginia. When the FBI is called to help, Alex Donvan, a behavioural analyst, is tasked with putting together a profile. She's aided by her friend and colleague Logan Hart, but he has been acting strangely and won't say why. When the kidnapper demands that Alex meet him at an abandoned amusement park in exchange for the location of all his captives, she takes the bait. But the meeting proves to be a trap, and the building she's in explodes.

Finding herself imprisoned with several other women, Alex works to think one step ahead of her captor. But the more Logan and the BAU learn about the kidnapper, the more they fear Alex may not make it out alive this time.

My Review:

After I read Night Fall, the first book in the Quantico Files series, I determined that the creep-factor was too high for my comfort level so I didn't read the second book, Dead Fall, and wasn't planning on reading this one either except for a dear reading friend who implored me to read Free Fall because she knew I would love it. And, yes, I trust her so much that I preordered the audible edition and listened to it all in a day and a half. And guess what? Diane was right! I loved it!

So, there's still a creep factor, but it didn't feel as sinister as in the first book. Yes, we're still dealing with a serial kidnapper but the focus was more on the behavioural analyst aspects of working a case and we don't get tons of creepy villain POV which helped a lot. We do get to follow one of the victims though, which upped the angst and brought a different kind of edge to the overall suspense.

While this is the third book in a series where both the romance and the characters' faith journeys are developed through each book, I do think you could read Free Fall as a standalone. I was thrown a bit with the opening scene until I realized it was one of those teaser 'drop the reader into the middle of the story and then backtrack to the actual beginning' kind of starts. You know, the kind that are popular on television dramas, where they begin with the dark moment and then the next scene is "nine days earlier" and the rest of the show builds back up to that dire point? So this first scene, is that, and you aren't meant to know what's going on -- it isn't because you missed something from book two. Phew! Hope that makes sense. :-)

The absolutely glorious part of this book is the plethora of inspirational threads that tie into the title in so many wonderful ways. Powerful and moving and profound -- the kind of novel that not only enriches a reader but magnifies her faith. So grateful to the author for providing so many awe-inspiring moments throughout this story. I was madly trying to transcribe quotes as I listened. Like:

"God will give us beauty for ashes, but we have to give him the ashes."  Yeah, think about that for a second. Because I'm guilty of hoarding my ashes instead of releasing them into His care.

"Just let God be God." Sigh...it really is that simple so why do I make it so complicated?

Both Alex and Logan are challenged in a myriad of ways and this story broke tradition and blazed a new path for Christian Fiction suspense. I'm still processing so many nuances of plot and character development. Really, just stunning!

I listened to the addible edition narrated by Vanessa Daniels who kept me riveted to the sigh-worthy conclusion.

Goal Update: #9 Read outside my comfort zone.
