CROSSFIRE
FBI special agent Julianna James is a top-notch negotiator who has never lost a hostage. Surely, she can manage to take care of her much younger sister, Dottie, who showed up unannounced to live with Julianna while she finished her senior year of high school.
A former sniper with the 75th Ranger Regiment, Clay Snyder left the arm after a tragic incident that he can't get past. Now he's working as a high school resource officer until he can figure out what to do with the rest of his life.
Their paths cross when Julianna is called in to negotiate a courtroom hostage situation involving clay's sister. Impressed and a it intimidated by the calm, capable woman with the dark hair and blue eyes. Clay invites her to speak at his school. Dottie's school.
But as the anniversary of a school shooting from Julianna's past approaches, it becomes clear that her perfect record is about to be tested and that Dottie is at risk. If Julianna and Clay can't figure out who's behind the attacks, more innocent people will die -- and Julianna just might be one of them.
This intense story of revenge and redemption from bestselling author and master of suspense Lynette Eason will have you up all night as you race toward the explosive finish.
My Review:
The pièce de résistance of all Lynette Eason's work to date. Seriously. This is that good. Better than good. Stupendous. But better than stupendous. Mind-blowing awesome. But better than...well, you get the idea. But how on earth do I review 'Crossfire' without giving away any of the intense, intricately woven plot?! Gah, this is going to be a challenge.
Okay, first things first -- this one is truly unputdownable so clear your calendar, lock yourself in your reading room with fortifying snacks and a comfort teddy and prepare to deep dive into suspense-y drama like you've never read before.
I was reminded early on of my first ever Christian Fiction romantic suspense -- 'The Negotiator' by Dee Henderson (O'Malley series.) I think because of the heroine's unique job, but also for the kind of character building that series is known for. But, my oh my, Eason anted up the suspense elements to the nth degree. But can I give specifics without giving anything away? I don't think so.
Just a readerly word of advice -- pay attention to even the smallest details because, by the end you will be stunned at the way the author pulled everything together. Both expected and unexpected. The way she guides readers through a labyrinth of events is sheer brilliance!!!!
Love the details of Julianna's profession. Each scene is believable, plausible and compelling. And the way Eason develops the romance -- also realistic, fuelled with faith and a strong redemptive thread for both hero and heroine. Extremely powerful.
This is the point where I need to tell you that 'Crossfire' is the second book in the 'Extreme Measures' series though it reads well as a standalone. The series centres around women who formed a friendship while in juvenile detention so we get to see some girl-bounding moments in each book but those scenes are written in a way that won't make a new-to-the-series reader feel like an outsider.
I listened to the audible edtion of 'Crossfire' and I have to say that Sara Sheckells' narration has made my top ten fave narrators list of all time -- and I have over 500 titles in my audible library and have likely listened to that many more through my public library. Her tone, pacing and the way she seemed to relish the story as much as I did increased my 'reading' enjoyment.

Sigh, those O'Malleys. I wanted to reread those books this year but the audio editions are narrated by men which isn't my favourite. :-( Good luck, Trixi!
