My Review:

My thanks to my public library for providing me with an excellent collection of retro reads to choose from.

Downton Abbey meets Miss Marple in this tantalizing mystery. This is the second book in the Drew Farthering Mystery series and it's just as much fun as the first. No worries if you haven't read book one -- the only over arcing plot line is Drew's pursuit of his lady love and can I just say that he portrays the besotted suitor to gentlemanly perfection. But a series of murders draws Drew into the middle of a perplexing puzzle that kept me guessing until the gobsmacking conclusion! Endless banter, witty flirtations and a resigned but exasperated Chief Inspector bring the perfect balance of humour to this historical mystery. Definitely one for the discerning armchair sleuth.

My Review:

This is real life at it's best -- and worst. Fragile family dynamics, broken lives and the hope God brings if we have the faith to see it. I felt emotionally pummeled as I wrestled right along with Lane and Ryan.

Lane who has always felt like an outsider in her large and boisterous overachieving family. Who struggles with body image issues and feelings of self-worth. Has the need to prove herself worthy which alters her priorities in a disastrous way. There were times that I got impatient with Lane but then Walsh would deliver another gut-wrenching tidbit from her past and I'd get her that much more.

And Ryan who has risen above horrific circumstances to become a man of integrity. The Kelley family has played a pivotal role in his life. Lifting him up when his own family failed him. Providing him with the kind of direction and acceptance he could never find at home. He has become the honorary brother and son.

And then a single reckless act catapults Ryan and the Kelley family into a journey of self-discovery and healing. And the catalyst for a romance that Lane never saw coming. A deeply thought-provoking story that left me wondering how many times I've let fear keep me from looking up and seeing the wonders God has in store for me.

My Review:

Intensely breath-snatching. An awkward truce forces these star-crossed lovers to work together to solve the mystery behind baby Addie...while trying to stay alive long enough to do it! Action from the get go keeps Tanner and Macy fighting to protect little Addie from a relentless force. Add to the mix the complications of tiptoeing around a messy end to what was once a promising future together and you get enough angst to keep a reader on edge for the duration. A sublime mix of romance and suspense with plenty action thrown in.

My Review:

Swoonworthy Regency Alert! Dust off those fainting couches and grab your smelling salts because at long last it is the Duke of Riverton himself who is destined for romance. And what a deliciously decadent though  bittersweet read this one is. That's because An Inconvenient Beauty is the last book in the Hawthorne House series. I'm currently inconsolable over this dastardly fact. Luckily I'm still basking in the warm glow of Regency euphoria brought upon by this spectacular grande finale.

No worries if you haven't read the first three books -- this easily reads as a standalone. But, if you are a Kristi Ann Hunter fan, you will love her all the more for the exquisite details she brings to this last story. Griffith's siblings and their spouses are all present and accounted for. In fact, the author has done a tremendous job of weaving diverse personalities together in an incredible series climax.

We have Griffith, the staid duke and eldest son, burdened with leadership at a very young age, actually seeking out his younger siblings for advice. Riotous scenes with all the brothers (I'm including in-laws here) giving him such a hard time along with some sage advice on courtship. And at his most dire moments he seeks out the women in his family where his woes are spun into comedic masterpieces as all things female clearly befuddle him. I laughed and cried and raged my way through the pages of this book.

Griffith is determined that his brain will lead his heart in his quest for a wife. To this end he has spent a year -- a year! -- studying and researching a certain lady to ensure suitability. Because he firmly believes that: "By applying a little logic to the situation, he would have no problem finding love with someone who wouldn't throw his life into utter chaos and put him through complete turmoil before finding his way to happiness." (p 65)

Yeah, right, cue the chaos! And it comes in the form of his 'intended's' cousin. Conflicted and intrigued, Griffith finds himself drawn to Isabella who is the exact opposite of his 'ideal wife' candidate. Witty dialogue, heated...make that scorching...glances across a crowded ballroom and all the machinations of polite society in the early 1800s make this a Regency page-turner of the highest class.

My Review:

Dr. Quinn meets Seven Brides for Seven Brothers in this captivating historical romance. There's something about an avalanche that strands a train full of women (including an abundance of mail-order brides) in an all male town that screams romantic mayhem!

Sumner's got backbone and natural leadership qualities as well as a medical degree if anyone will let her practice. Unfortunately, the mine owners aren't open to a female doctor...or any female for that matter! Makes for some infuriating and frustrating and down right funny situations.

Jonah is the perfect noble hero. He's let pain from his past dictate his solitary life but when Sumner becomes his responsibility he is taunted by dreams of a future he thought long dead. These two crackle and spar at every opportunity until unexpected tenderness begins to break down barriers.

Bingham has set the stage for future books in the series with an intriguing town and some likable secondary characters that definitely need their own happily-ever-after too. A brilliant start to a wonderful new series.

This time I'm picking your brains for Christian Fiction to be released in January, February or March 2018. As usual with these giveaways, please make sure to read the the rules which will be posted each day. Basically, the week is divided into genre days where y'all can offer up to three book selections per day. Name/book combos will be entered in a draw and if you win, it's an IOU for the book on release date.

A Dangerous Legacy

But when she negotiates an unlikely alliance with him, the web of treachery they dive into proves to be far more dangerous than they ever could have known.

My Review:

There is something so decadent about an edge-of-you-seat suspense paired with historical romance!  And this one is riveting. Deeply intricate story threads woven into a complex pattern of loss and greed and vengeance. A villian who has "...no soul and that let him fight with the single-minded zeal of a jackal."  (p 12) and a heroine determined to stand up for what is right and just though it alters the course of her life in devastating ways. A family legacy of sorts that has ensnared both Lucy and her brother. The layered depths in the suspense is exceptionally well done. Enthralling historical details -- telegraphy, Morse code, the early days of international news reporting and homing pigeons! Diverse and captivating and all of it plays an important role in this romantic suspense.

Lucy is a grounded working girl -- independent by necessity but also by choice. She loves her job as a telegrapher and is fiercely loyal to the Associated Press. Which makes for some spectacular fireworks when rival company Reuters imports British aristocracy to manage their New York office. Enter Sir Colin Beckwith and let the toe-curling begin. As well as the laughter thanks to the wicked banter this adversarial hero and heroine engage in on a daily basis.

If you look 'pager-turner'up in the dictionary you should find A Dangerous Legacy as the definition. I inhaled this book. Actually woke up at four in the morning and rejoiced because that meant I got to spend two blissful hours reading before I had to get ready for the day! Definitely one for the long-time keeper shelf!

My Review:

Another debut novel -- that's 3 this week! Exciting to discover new talent in the Christian publishing industry.

A touching, sweet and hopeful story that celebrates God meeting us in all the hard places in this life. It's much more than a love story -- in fact, I'd say the romance isn't as pronounced as you usually find in a Love Inspired novel. This is more about the hesitant journey towards an unexpected friendship that has the power to develop into something much deeper.

But the timing -- even if it's God's timing -- seems completely off to Frankie and Ben. She's wary because she's newly divorced and trying to bring some stability back into her daughter's life while figuring out what their future is going to look like. And Ben is overwhelmed with the 24/7 care of a father stricken by Alzheimer's. His hopes of recreating some happy summer memories with his dad take on many unexpected twists and turns as he grapples with the increasing severity of the disease.

Gartshore draws on her own experience coping with her father's struggle with Alzheimer's and she really conveys the frustration, heartache and even humour that comes from dealing with this condition. It was an eyeopening and emotional read for that reason. Definitely a difficult backdrop for a romance but then, love doesn't always come calling at the most convenient times, does it? Which is maybe the point -- that we need to grab hold of the good things in life while we can and trust in God with the rest.
