Larkspur Cove

GIVEAWAY

RANDOM RETRO READ DAY!
WINGATE, LISA
LARKSPUR COVE

Adventure is the last thing on Andrea Henderson's mind when she moves to Moses Lake. After surviving the worst year of her life, she's struggling to build a new life for herself and her son as a social worker. Perhaps in doing a job that makes a difference, she can find some sense of purpose and solace in her shattered faith.

For new Moses Lake game warden Mart McClendon, findina a sense of purpose in life isn't an issue. He took the job to get out of southwest Texas and the constant reminders of a tragedy for which he can't forgive himself.

But when a little girl is seen with the town recluse, Mart and Andrea are drawn together in the search for her identity. The little girl offers them both a new chance at redemption and hope -- and may bring them closer than either ever planned.

My Review:

published in 2010
Thanks to my public library for providing me with an audible version of this book

"A kite is like a man's life," my granddad had said as I weighed the choice between letting that kite soar and holding it down. "No matter how much he tries, he can't make it more than a piece of paper and a ball of twine, on his own. He's got to give it over to something bigger, let the Good Lord breathe into it. After that, he just has to do two things -- turn his eyes toward heaven and keep hold of the string."

Lisa Wingate is a master storyteller and I found myself, once again, completely enthralled in her fiction. Complex characters struggling with true-to-life issues that seem insurmountable at times. Gut-wrenching and inspiring and so very hopeful! I particularly related to Andrea as she tries to find her footing after a messy divorce. My heart was in my throat for much of the read. And all mixed up in Mart and Andrea's complicated love story is the mystery of a vulnerable little girl found in the company of a war-damaged recluse. Spellbinding stuff!

  3. This sounded vaguely familiar so I looked it up (thank goodness for Goodreads keeping track) I read it in 2015, I really wish I had a photographic memory and could remember all the books I've read in detail :) I do want to read the rest of this series though, I've had them on my kindle forever!

    1. Ha -- I'm the exact opposite...I've read the second and third book but missed this one so I was playing catch-up. I use my blog as a record keeper for the books I've read. It's hard to remember every nuance of every book...and sometimes storylines blur and it can cafuzzle an avid reader no end. :-)

  8. Don't enter me as my library had this good one, too, but just wanted to comment on Lisa Wingate in general. I just finished her book from 2018..... Before We Were Yours....and I felt like I had the breath knocked from me. Her presentation of the heart wrenching history of stolen children was masterful. Thanks!

    1. Ooohhh - I read that one as well. Wasn't it heartbreaking? I think that's what she's doing now -- taking real gritty issues from history and blending them into her fiction.

  11. I know I'm late for the Lisa Wingate party, but I just finished my first book by her last week. And, oh my goodness, did I ever fall in love with her writing. It didn't hurt that it was the mega bestseller When We Were Yours. Wow! What an amazing and powerful book. I'm definitely ready for another great story by this author.

    1. By the way, what did you think of the audio? I'm always interested in a good audio rec.

    2. When We Were Yours was amazing, wasn't it? Powerful and appalling all at the same time!

I'd say the audio was average...not my favourite (I keep a list of some of my fav narrators now -- ones I get almost as excited over as an author!) And there have been some audio books that I haven't been able to listen to because...ugh! This one was somewhere in the middle. Good luck, Terrill!

    3. I have favorite narrators, too! I listened to enough audios that I know when to stop and just read instead, because a bad narration can really effect the overall story. I know there are a few books I probably would have loved if I had just read instead.

And, yes, When We Were Yours was crazy good and appalling. After I read it, I started researching everything about Georgia Tan and that time in Tennessee. I nearly had my husband convinced to read historical fiction, just because the factual information in the story was so compelling. I should never had told him that Rill's family was fictional. 😂

    4. I love learning history through fiction -- when an author is reliable and Lisa Wingate sure is! And I agree, a bad narrator can suck the life right out of a story!
