WITH THIS PLEDGE
What can a woman -- a mere governess -- do against the scourge of slavery?
Elizabeth "Lizzie" Clouston's quietly held principles oppose those of the Southern Cause -- but when forty thousand soldiers converge on the fields of Franklin, Tennessee, the war demands an answer. The Carnton home where she is governess is converted into a Confederate field hospital, and Lizzie is called upon to assist the military doctor with surgeries that determine life or death. Faced with the unimaginable, she must summon fortitude, even as she fears for the life of Towny, her fiance and lifelong friend.
As a young soldier lies dying in Lizzie's arms, she vows to relay his final words to his mother, but knows little more than the boy's first name. That same night, decorated Mississippi sharpshooter Captain Roland Ward Jones extracts a different promise from Lizzie: that she intervene should the surgeon decide to amputate his leg.
Lizzie is nothing if not a woman of her word, earning the soldiers' respect as she tends to the wounded within Carnton's walls. None is more admiring than Captain Jones, who doesn't realize she is pledged to another. But as Lizzie's heart softens toward the Confederate captain, she discovers that his moral ground in at odds with her own. Now torn between love, principles, and promises made, she struggles to be true to her heart while standing for what she knows is right -- no matter the cost.
From the pages of history and the personal account of those who endured the Battle of Franklin, Tamera Alexander weaves the real-life love letters between Captain Roland Ward Jones and Miss Elizabeth Clouston into a story of unlikely romance first kindled amid the shadows of war.
My Review:
There aren't many authors who can drag me into the Civil War era with only a minimum of kicking and screaming and Tamera Alexander is one of them. I'm Irish Canadian so the War Between the States really doesn't mean a whole lot to my personal history. Plus...Gone With the Wind likely scarred me for life. :-) And I find it really hard to relate to southern politics -- especially slavery -- so, it's just an era I tend to shy away from in my fiction. But then...what can I say? It's Tamera Alexander!
Richly layered, exquisite storytelling beguiled this semi-reluctant reader from the very first page. I became transfixed, completely absorbed in this based-on-true-life historical romance. I've noticed a Carnton Plantation buzz on social media for awhile now but never quite understood the fascination...until reading this book. Every little detail captivated me and this author is renowned for her exacting research skills.
A complex plot delivers action and angst with relatable characters that sent this reader into an emotional tailspin. Alexander does such a great job of depicting not just the war raging around them, but the war raging within as well. So...while I'm still not a Civil War aficionado I've been converted enough to declare With This Pledge belongs on every reader's wishlist.

DeleteThanks Kav 😊
DeleteAs a Virginian, there is Civil War history all around me, but still, I'm not one to want to jump in to the "gritty details" of any war. I had read there was a good amount of detail to the medical side of the war in this book so that has had me on the fence about reading it. But, as you said...Tamera Alexander!
ReplyDeleteSo I'm taking the plunge and throwing my name in the hat!
thanks Kav! tracey14567 at gmail dot com
You must be living and breathing it for sure. So many aspects of war is hard to stomach in fiction but I think Tamera Alexander does a great job of delivering the gory details without it feeling like it's for shock value or glorified like some books do. Maybe because those scenes are balanced by the characters' emotions? Anyway -- do take the plunge, Tracey. Good luck!
DeleteI'm gonna plunge in for this one, too. I do enjoy her books! Thanks for your review and giveaway, Kav!
ReplyDeletejacsmi75 at gmail dot com
She's such a gifted writer. Good luck, Jackie!
DeleteI can certainly understand the challenge for an Irish Canadian who didn't have family impacted (quite a few 1700-1800's Irish roots to US, myself!) to become as involved in a Civil War novel as, say, a hero cowboy of the Old West novel! I have done a great deal of reading and general research about the Civil War as part of doing family genealogy. The medical aspects were fascinating, and it was only becoming noticed by a very few how improper sanitation between patients hastened infection and death. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteAnd not having had the same history classes all through skill so much of it is foreign to me, from the politics to the historical figures and the significance of locations etc. The medical aspects of the time were brutal and must have been overwhelming. What a shock for genteel young ladies pressed into nursing...boggles the mind. Good luck, CC!
DeleteGood luck, Kate!
ReplyDelete❤️ her books!! Melmo2610ATgmailDOTcom
ReplyDeleteI know!!! Good luck, Melmo!
DeleteLots of Dutch readers enjoy the books set during the American Civil War. Personally, I have a love/hate relationship with books set in this era. I totally get what you're saying. But who can resist a Tamera Alexander novel? I absolutely would love to read this one. Thanks for the chance.
ReplyDeleteMbaaij at hetnet dot nl
That's very curious, Marian! I would see Dutch readers more World War II fans...though the Civil War is a fascinating time in history and it seems like it's known world wide even if it is American history. Good luck!
DeleteThis book is So high on my tbr list!!

I know, right? This love story actually happened! Good luck, Alison!
DeleteLike so many others, I'm hesitant about diving into Civil War fiction. Even if it has a lovely romantic thread in it. Although, I'm the same about WW1 and WW2 fiction. I tend to seek those stories out in audio book. I'm not sure why, but it makes it easier for me to just go for it, while actually physically reading those stories make me a little more nervous of the content. So that's exactly what I did with Christmas at Carnton. I listened to the whole book while wrapping Christmas 2017 presents. 😂 I can't believe it was that long ago since the prequel was released. I loved CAC and it definitely had me less concerned about reading vs. listening to the rest of the series.
ReplyDeletetlhcoupon(at)hotmail(dot)com
Oh, I'm going to wrap presents this year to a Christmas stories! Why haven't I thought of that?! You have to go into a war novel knowing it's going to get tough in places. I noticed some 1 star reviews on Amazon for this book and I had to take a look because I couldn't fathom anyone giving it that low a score. Even if you didn't like the war parts or the romance or whatever the sheer writing majesty is worth more than 1 star. Anyway, those one star reviewers didn't like the war parts which is totally valid as far as reading preferences go but...if you're reading a book set during the Civil War around a very famous battle...well, it stands to reason there are going to be some gritty war parts, right?
DeleteOh -- and I find it really interesting that you prefer to listen to a war story rather than read it. I mean, if you have book in hand you can at least skim over the war parts but you have to live every wretched second right along with the narrator in a audio book. :-) Mind you, I've done that with some WWII novels and enjoyed every torturous moment of the gritty scenes. There's something about a good narration that makes me feel like I'm at the movies watch it all play out on the big screen. Good luck, Terrill!
I think that's just it. An audio book is kind of like the movies. I can watch a movie with such content pretty easily, but reading one is more nerve-wracking for me. Listening is less participatory or something. Reading puts me there in the middle of all of it. You know how it is when you get lost in a story and everything else ceases to exist.
DeleteOh, and that's too bad about the 1-Star reviews. When a book is really well-written, I try to be less biased with my rating. Sometime you just have to respect the story as it's written even if you would have liked it to turn out a little bit different.
DeleteGreat review. cheetahthecat1986ATgmailDOTcom
