Far Side of the Sea

GIVEAWAY
BRESLIN, KATE
FAR SIDE OF THE SEA

In spring 1918, Lieutenant Colin Mabry, a British soldier working with M18 after suffering injuries on the front, receives a message by carrier pigeon. It is from Jewel Reyer, the woman he once loved and who saved his life -- a woman he believed to be dead. Traveling to France to answer her urgent summons, he desperately hopes this mission will ease his guilt and restore the courage he lost on the battlefield.

Colin is stunned, however, to discover the message came from Jewel's half sister, Johanna. Johanna, who works at a dovecote for French Army Intelligence, found Jewel's diary and believes her sister is alive in the custody of a German agent. With spies everywhere, Colin is skeptical of Johanna, but as they travel across France and Spain, a tentative trust begins to grow between them.

When their pursuit leads them straight into the midst of a treacherous plot, danger and deception turn their search for answers into a battle for their lives.

My Review:

"God sees us with the heart."

A Downton Abbeyish spy thriller that held me completely spellbound. I binge-listened to the audible version which was brilliantly narrated by Sarah Zimmerman. I hung on every word and was sorely tempted to hike up the speed and listen chipmunk-style when things got tense. You'll be happy to know I resisted the urge...barely, choosing instead to savor every nuance of the exceptional storytelling.

Intrigue, danger, romance! Plot twists galore! I was thunderstruck numerous times. I'd get pretty full of myself, thinking I'd figured something out only to have Breslin blow me away with something so much better than anything I could imagine. And all the rich historical details -- be still my heart! Lots for a historical fiction connoisseur to swoon over. The carrier pigeon angle was utterly fascinating -- especially in view of our 21st century communication devices. Riveting stuff.

And then there's the hero and heroine. Colin with his misplaced sense of loyalty that set my heart aflutter even though I didn't want him to be that noble. lol And Johanna who has her own agenda. I wasn't sure about her at first but she grew on me, especially as the author wove a beautiful redeeming thread into her story. Theirs is the kind of love story that has the power to shred a sensitive reader's heart if she's not careful.

Another stunning novel from an author who knows how to deliver a delicious mix of intrigue, inspiration and the sweet promise of romance.

  7. I always appreciate the depth of historical detail in her stories, all of which I greatly enjoyed. Also, we don't have as many books focusing on the WWI time period, as we have other eras. And, speaking of which, I am currently reading a WWI era book by a previously unknown to me new author, Jennifer Q Hunt, entitled Some Through the Fire (2015/2017), one I would consider Christian fiction. It is very good. Thanks!

    1. And historical details that aren't that common...at least to me -- like carrier pigeons. :-) That book by Jennifer Q. Hunt does sound good. My library doesn't have a copy :-( but it's available on Book Depository :-) Good luck, CC!

  10. Far Side of the Sea is all that and more! I literally gafawwed at you wanting to listen chipmunk style at tense scenes....yeah, I could clearly picture that in mind 😂😂 Reminds me of the old cassette tapes where you could speed up the music or vocal recording on it. I always got such a laugh when I did that as a kid/teen. 😂😂

I've only read this one, but evidently Colin shows up in "As High as the Heavens". So I have that one on my want-to-read list. Kate Breslin has a way of bringing the reality of historical wartime to our modern day attention. I, too, thought the carrier pigeon angle was interesting, not something I knew about! Love learning history in the pages of a book, don't you?

    1. Yes -- it's fun to discover story crossover characters!

It's funny because you can actually speed up audio books to 2 x the speed but why would you do that? It would take all the fun out of reading! Though -- it might be amusing to hear the nefarious bad guy talking like a chipmunk. lol

  13. Love stories in this time frame. It's during my parent's time and makes me think about how it must have been during their time.

"FAR SIDE OF THE SEA" had me with her phrase spy thriller. Sounds fabulous and I'd love the opportunity to read it.

You gave me my daily chuckle when you talked of speeding up the hear it faster with chipmunk voices. Now if you do that often enough, will you have learned a new language? Sorry it just hit me funny and I could see me doing just that. :)
