Shelter from the Storm

GIVEAWAY
DAVIDS, PATRICIA
SHELTER FROM THE STORM

An Amish marriage of convenience.
A new North Country Amish novel.

Secretly pregnant and unwed, Gemma Lapp has a difficult choice -- face her Amish community or raise her baby alone. But when a storm strands Gemma in the wilderness with her former crush, Jesse Crump, she knows her secret won't be safe for long. Gemma can't imagine trusting a man again...until Jesse proposes a marriage of convenience. Could their arrangement lead to love?

My Review:

There's something about a marriage of convenience story that sends me into a swoony tailspin and this one ticks all the boxes.

Character-driven and emotionally compelling, I was committed from the very first page. Love that Jesse and Gemma have a rather notorious history -- a young woman's crush gone awry, you might say. Harsh words followed by hurt feelings sent Gemma running away to lick her wounds while Jesse stayed put and brooded. :-) A year and a half later and they meet again under impossible circumstances. Love the charged atmosphere that crackles around these two. He's long-suffering and cranky while she's snippy and withdrawn but there's a subtext going on that's at odds with all that grumpiness.

Davids is thoroughly mean to her characters, going to great lengths to torture them (and this reader!) There's angst aplenty and I love the wintry wilderness setting! Nothing like being forced to work together to battle the elements to bring about a truce.

This is the second book in the North Country Amish series and I have to say I love the unique setting. A new Amish settlement in Maine provides lots of scope for the imagination. Can't wait to visit New Covenant again in March 2020 when The Amish Teacher's Dilemma releases.

  1. You have me hooked at marriage-of-convenience but I'm a little wary at "secretly pregnant". I don't usually go for books with secret baby/child...but this one sounds like there's more going on in the background with Gemma. And your review compels me to want to read her backstory and watch the love develop between her & Jessie. Two of my favorite proses are reunion love and marriage-of-convenience, so I'm willing to give "Shelter From the Storm" a chance 😉 And I love Amish fiction so there that going for it too!

    1. I'm with you on the secret baby and even pregnant heroine romances but Patricia Davids makes it work...and just to put your mind at ease, this isn't a secret baby trope -- Gemma comes home pregnant -- she's keeping the pregnancy a secret until she reaches her family but she didn't keep the pregnancy a secret from the father. If that settles your mind a little. :-) Good luck, Trixi!

  3. I LOVE the marriage-of-convenience trope. That's all I had to read from your review and I was already scrambling to enter. Lol! That trope along with enemies-to-lovers are my favorite and they usually go very well together. It sounds like there's a little bit of both tropes in this book. *grabby hands*
