State of Lies

GIVEAWAY
MITCHELL, SIRI
STATE OF LIES

The secrets of those closest to us can be the most dangerous of all.

Months after her husband, Sean, is killed by a hit-and-run driver, physicist Georgie Brennan discovers he lied to her about where he had been going that day. A cryptic notebook, a missing computer, and strange noises under her house soon have her questioning everything she thought she knew.

With her job hanging by a thread, her son struggling to cope with his father's death, and her four-star general father up for confirmation as the next secretary of defense, Georgie quickly finds herself tangled in a web of political intrigue that has no clear agenda and dozens of likely villains.

Only one thing is clear: someone wants her dead too. And the more she digs for the truth, the fewer people she can trust.

Not her friends.
Not her parents.
Maybe not even herself.

My Review:

Whoa! There's a lot of page-turning intensity in this thrilling political suspense. Brilliantly executed down to every last little detail and so complex -- but not hard for this non-American who doesn't know much about foreign politics and military operations to follow. And absolutely riveting.

Loved the pacing -- short chapters that leave a reader yearning for more --  an endless string of mind-blowing, gasp-out-loud revelations -- the first person narrative that kept me anchored in Georgie's here and now. It all brings a frenzied edge to this exceptional story.

The only thing missing is an inspirational thread. The publisher is Thomas Nelson and they seem to be veering away from Christian Fiction though their website says they are "a world leading publisher and provider of Christian content." That doesn't seem to the case any more when it comes to their fiction. This book is clean, though there are a few scenes on the edgier side.

  1. Sounds like something I might like, Kav. Please include me in the draw. (It's disappointing to see how Thomas Nelson isn't really a sure bet for publishing fiction that has an inspirational thread anymore.)

    1. Yes, Thomas Nelson seems to be half Christian Fiction half not now...maybe a bit more on the not side. I just wish they'd market them that way so consumers know what they are getting. Good luck, Cheryl.

  2. I *think* I have this one on my shelf, I'll have to look and let you know.

Yes, wholly disappointing when a big name Christian fiction publisher veers off course with the faith elements in stories. I recently read something by Revell that shocked me because it had NO faith thread...and I had such high hopes because it was one I had been anticipating from a new author. I get they want to reach the general market, but let's stay true to the reason they write CF in the first place, eh? That's my thought anyway.

    1. Sigh, Revell too. Not as many as Thomas Nelson, though. Hope it's not becoming a trend. I fear that staying true to CF just isn't paying the bills so they have to delve into the general market. I still say they need to find a way to mark their books so we know which are Christian Fiction and which aren't.

    2. Kav, I double checked and I do indeed have this on my shelf so I won't be entering today.

Thanks for the heads up on content. Always appreciate knowing about lack of a faith element in a book. 😊

    3. Yep -- it makes a difference going in if you know not to expect a faith element -- just a good story.

  5. I guess I’ll take a chance on this one. I have read Siri Mitchell before. It is disappointing about little or no spiritual thread in supposedly Christian books.

    1. I've enjoyed both her contemporary and her historical books -- she knows how to spin a captivating tale. Not sure if suspense is a new genre for her or if I've just missed her other suspense books but she sure knows how to deliver intrigue and danger! Good luck, Paula.

  7. Great title and cover. "STATE OF LIES" sounds like a wonderful book and one I could really get in to. Love how secrets have a way for coming out and how one usually leads to a whole slew of them.

Siri Mitchell is new to me, but one I definitely plan to explore.

Thank you for your review and the opportunity to win a copy!

  16. This sounds really good as a romantic suspense/thriller. It's too bad about the missing faith thread. It makes me wonder what their mentality is as they discuss these matters pre-production. Is it a conscious decision by the publisher or by the author?

  17. I've heard good things about this book. It doesn't bother me that it doesn't have a strong Christian theme, as long as it's a clean read.
