Prelude for a Lord

GIVEAWAY
RANDOM RETRO READ DAY!
ELLIOT, CAMILLE
PRELUDE FOR A LORD

An awkward young woman. A haunted young man. A forbidden instrument. Can the love of music bring them together...or will it tear them apart?

Bath, England - 1810

At twenty-eight, Alethea Sutherton is past her prime for courtship; but social mores have never been her forte. She might be a lady, but she is first and foremost a musician.

In Regency England, however, the violin is considered an inappropriate instrument for a lady. Ostracized by society for her passion, Alethea practices in secret and waits for her chance to flee to the Continent, where she can play without scandal.

But when a thief's interest in her violin endangers her and her family, Alethea is determined to discover the enigmatic origins of her instrument...with the help of the dark, brooding Lord Dommick.

Scarred by war, Dommick finds solace only in playing his violin. He is persuaded to help Alethea, and discovers an entirely new yearning in his soul.

Alethea finds her reluctant heart drawn to Dommick in the sweetest of duets...just as the thief's desperation builds to a tragic crescendo.

My Review;

published in 2014

This is my second time reading Prelude for a Lord. I was drawn to this book despite my teetering TBR pile because I followed a bibliophile rabbit trail after reading Carrie's (of Reading is my Superpower blog fame) review of a Camy Tang suspense. That led me to checking my library to see if they had a copy of that older novel (they do!) But it also nudged my memory -- Camy Tang has also published Regencies under the pseudonym Camille Elliott! That had me checking her website to see if she had any new Regencies out(she doesn't) and that sent me dashing to my bookshelves to hunt down this book which I remembered with great fondness so, of course, I had to dive in! Such is the crazy maze that is my readerly mind. :-) So here's my review from 2014:

I am in Regency heaven! From the clever title to the gorgeous cover right through to the final word...sheer bliss. The kind of read that makes you giddy with anticipation and has you skipping over pages with glee as the real world fades into oblivion. You're so convinced that you are in Regency England that you ring for the maid to bring you tea and cakes, only when she doesn't show up, you come crashing back to reality with such velocity it hurts. It's that kind of absorbing read. :-)

Alethea is a captivating character. Enough of a maverick to make her interesting without losing those oh-so-proper ladylike qualities a woman of genteel breeding must possess. Dommick is her brooding hero. He's surrounded by a darkness that keeps him alluringly aloof. And then there's the mystery. The danger. A host of amazing secondary characters including a slimeball villain. And the romance! A fainting couch is a necessity for this read -- you'll be swooning that much!

Stunning and brilliant and too good to miss!

  8. It's time for me to take a step back in time. "PRELUDE FOR A LORD" sounds like the perfect way to do so.

Even though I don't play, I do live in a town where playing a violin or another musical instrument is the way many make a living. We moved here partially because of our love of music. Hard to fathom a time and place where it was inappropriate for a woman to indulge is such as lovely sounds of music.

Thank you for the opportunity to win a copy! I would love to read the story of Alethea and Dommick.

    1. The historical aspects of women musicians is a fascinating topic. I remember reading somewhere that a woman playing the violin with her arms all 'akimbo' was wanton! How funny is that? Good luck, Kay!

    2. It is so much fun and amazing that authors can be so versatile. Camy Tang does contemporary, suspense and now Regency and does them all well. Good luck, Paula! (And I've noticed that sometimes the copyright page has a different name than the author's...but not always. Must be reasoning behind that.)
