AMANDA
"The devil made me do it" is a phrase that will never pass my lips. Why would it when I have Delores, my undiagnosed autoimmune disorder, to make all my decisions for me? (Yes, I named her myself since the doctors couldn't do it for me.) A get together with friends? Delores says no. I'll have my prescheduled daily afternoon fever and fatigue at that time.
My two biggest regrets with having Delores direct my fate? One, my family thinks my illness is all in my head. And two, I set the love of my life, Peter Reynolds, free from my anchoring tether so he could fly. I never thought I'd see him again, but five years later he's soaring in the limelight as one of the most talked-about defensive players in professional football. Oh, and did I mention he also happens to play for the team my boss just assigned me to social media manage?
Meanwhile, nothing much has changed for me. Delores still bosses me around, and I'm still hopelessly in love with Peter. What's a girl to do?
My Review:
i have so many random thoughts about this book whirling around in my mind that I think I've created a new kind of brain fog -- bibliofog: in which a reader is so overwhelmed with all the fictional feels after reading a book, she is barely coherent. :-)
So excuse this disjointed list-like ramble, but that's where my head -- and heart -- are at right now.
That cover!!! Love the retro vibe, the colour blocking, the simplicity actually makes it stand out even more. All the books in this series are like that and they sure would make a literary statement on a bookshelf! Since I've been listening to the audible editions, I can't try that out...unless I buy my own paperback copies too....there's a thought.
I'm thrilled...well, maybe touched is the better word...to read about a heroine struggling with health issues. Specifically an undiagnosed autoimmune disorder. As someone who went through an excruciating journey with an undiagnosed disorder for years this read was both a bit triggering and cathartic. I love the idea that someone like me can be a heroine in her own story and that she gets the guy!
And, wowzers!! The guy!!!! Peter is high up on my favourite heroes ever pedestal -- might have bounced some of 'em right off the platform on his way up. No worries though, he always gives them a hand up. (You have to read the book to get the significance of that.) This hero is the definition of integrity and honour. And grit and determination. Anchored in his faith and steadfast in living it out in his life. And when he sets his sights on Amanda...
Whimper, my fainting couch has scorch marks and I don't even care! Squeallll...reunion romance alert! They both haven't stopped loving each other but there's all kinds of emotional junk in the way. The undercurrents sent my tummy into loop-de-loops. I was on the very romantical edge all the way to the end.
And sassy, smart-mouthed Amanda puts on a great front to the world, but the closer Peter gets, the more her facade cracks. Honestly, sometimes she went too far and I cringed a couple of times over what she said but Peter doesn't let her get away with anything. He calls her on it and forces her to reassess. Pries the vulnerability right out of her while she's kicking and screaming all the way.
Back to gushing over Peter. His caring nature. Tender acceptance. I wanted to smack Amanda upside the head for making him work so hard. lol But at the same time, I could understand why she is the way she is. Aaaggghhh, great character growth...for both heroine and reader.
There's plenty of SoCal sister bonding time. Amanda is the fourth book, and can be read as a standalone, but honestly, the series is so stinkin' amazing you'll want to read them all! I get so excited when the girls get together -- especially when they bring their heroes with them.
I could go on, but this review is already way too long. Just do yourself a favour and buy the book.

ReplyDeleteWhat a thought provoking and hopefully educational basis for what sounds to be a very well written tale. Thanks!
And it's all done with a healthy mix of humour which makes it all the better. Good luck, CC!

Isn't that the cutest cover ever? And totally reflects the story. Really well done. Good luck, Kelly!
DeleteThank you for your review on "AMANDA" which sounds like a must read! YES I love the cover too! Love that its about an undiagnosed disease because I can so relate. Been going to specialists for years. One of my problems is an undiagnosed soft tissue disease. Tests show I've got it but they just can't find the right peg to hang it on yet.
ReplyDeleteIt's not on my must read TBR list and can't wait for the opportunity to read it. Greatly appreciate the chance to win a copy!

ReplyDeleteAh, thanks, Lucy. Good luck!
DeleteThis sounds like a fun read and one that would bring a chuckle to the face of someone suffering with an autoimmune disease. I never thought to have 'her' lol. My friend used hers by asking God how to use her suffering for him, that was the best, and so was she!!

That's a wonderful approach to living with a chronic health issue! Leaning into Him instead of turning away from Him is so important. Good luck, Wendy!
