SALTWATER COWBOY
He's trying to forget. She'd give anything to remember.
Officer Levi Sutherland wants to protect the wild horses of Cape Corral and keep the island residents safe. But memories of his deceased wife haunt him at every turn and make him long for a fresh start. When a woman washes ashore with a bullet wound and no memories, Levi knows he can't leave until he discovers what happened to her.
The woman -- whose necklace reads Dani -- captures Levi's attention like no one has in a long time. But which side of the law is she on? Could Dani be mixed up with other mysterious incidents happening on the island?
Together, can the two find answers and create new memories? Or will secrets tear them apart and destroy a future as uncertain as Dani's past?
My Review:
Wow, I think I might have fallen for the island even more than the cowboy! I become enchanted by Cape Corral and the wild horses from Barritt's stunning descriptions. I can still smell the tang of salt in the air and hear the muffled thud of thundering hooves on the sand. This is definitely my idea of the perfect summer beach read!
So, if you love horses and cowboys (and not necessarily in that order!) and you're looking for a riveting literary escape, look no further, Saltwater Cowboy's got you covered.
A second chance romance / amnesia suspense that kept me in a frenzied page turning state (with the occasional swoon break) right to the breathless, heart-pounding finale!
The amnesia trope can be tricky to pull off without feeling cliche but Barritt really sells it in Dani's story. Love the way this mystery unfolds as pieces of her past are slowly revealed. And Levi can't help but be intrigued -- and not just by her circumstances. :-)
His wife's tragic death has left him with a love/hate relationship with his island home. He loves the wild horses he protects -- along with the rest of the island inhabitants -- but every nook and cranny is filled with haunting memories of all he's lost and he's giving serious consideration to an out-of-state job offer until he's presented with the mystery that is Dani.
Great pacing with some intriguing bad guy POV scenes that amp up the fear factor and make for a compelling suspense. Throw in some toe-curling romance and a band of saltwater cowboys and, well, woohoo, I have a new series addiction!

Love Christy Barritt! She is excellent with mystery and some romance too! Looks like a read that really opens up the visuals. Thanks for sharing your review. Just won so not entering, but definitely putting Saltwater Cowboy on my TBR pile.
ReplyDeleteShe's such a prolific writer! I gave up on some of the ones I missed from her backlist but am trying to keep up with her more recent series now. And definitely a visual read for me -- I can feel the sand between my toes still. lol I want to live on a wild horse island!!!! With cowboys :-)
DeleteI really love an amnesia angle in a suspense novel! For me, it ramps up the tension & mystery.
ReplyDeleteI have not yet discovered Christy Barritt's writing, though I know she has lots of books out! This would be a great introduction 😊

Oh wow, you haven't read anything by Christy Barritt? I can see how daunting it would be to know where to dive in. I read her LIS books first and totally missed her mega length indie mystery series and finally dived in to some indie suspense when I found them on audible. Still too many for me to catch up on but I'm going to try on this fairly new series. Well, there's five books in only a year a half so.... Good luck, Trixi!
DeleteOops -- my math is off -- it's only been 10 months! And it's not the only series she's releasing. This author writes fast and furious!
DeleteOh goodness she writes for Love Inspired too?? Wow, I'm REALLY behind....sigh!
DeleteLooking at Amazon....so many different series, so many books!! Reminds me of Susan Sleeman and how fast she writes her more independent ones. Lots of catching up to do!
I know! I'm working my way through her Lantern Beach series and thought I was doing great until I noticed the mega spin offs from that series. Then I got distracted by Fog Lake, read one and noticed the cowboy series and...ack, I'm like a dog barking squirrel alarms. I leave over chasing one, so I can sniff out another. LOL I think Christy Barritt could keep me in books for months! I do think I'm current on her LIS though (patting myself on the back.)
DeleteAck -- I just checked her website, not sure if it's totally updated (that would be a full time job all on it's own!) I tallied up 108 books! And I've only read 13...and she's written 15 LIS so I am not up to date with them after all. Sigh.
DeleteThose new books (or old books or series books, etc) do attract like a dog to a squirrel....you could go down a rabbit hole finding all kinds of stories & spin-offs....lol! Just think, we'll have a lifetime supply of stories to read if we keep this up, that's a good thing, right? Bwhahahahaha!!
