When You Are Near

GIVEAWAY
PETERSON, TRACIE
WHEN YOU ARE NEAR

Come one, come all, Brookstone Wild West Extravaganza!

After her father's death, Lizzy Brookstone, a trick rider in the all-female Brookstone Wild West Extravaganza, wants nothing more than to quilt her role as the star of the show and live a quiet life on her family's ranch. But returning home would bring Wesley DeShazer, the ranch's foreman and the man who broke her heart, back into her life. In addition, the troope's new manager fears that Lizzy's departure could doom the already cash-strapped show.

Hope grows in Lizzy during a stopover at Fleming Farm. Ella Fleming not only has a natural talent for trick riding and could easily replace Lizzy, but she's eager to join the show to flee a forced betrothal. However, while there, one of the show's wranglers is killed in a manner Lizzy finds suspicious. And during her escape from the farm, Ella stumbles across a secret that could affect all of their lives, as well as the future of the Brookstone Extravaganza.

My Review:

An all-female Wild West show -- what a spectacular setting for a series! Loved getting an insider's view of trick-riding and managing a traveling show in 1900. Living quarters in a train car sounds so exciting (a childhood dream of mine, in fact!) But though the story begins 'on the road' in Washington DC, half of the book takes place on a Montana ranch so we get some 'real' wild west action as well!

When You Are Near is the first book in Peterson's Brookstone Brides series and the author does a great job of introducing readers to a bevy of memorable characters including the three women destined to be the heroines of their own stories. Love the way the story built, as Ella and Mary were added to the mix. These women are stronger than they realize and friendship binds them in a special way.

There's more than one dastardly villain to thwart (though I fear they will go on to wreck havoc in future books), a complicated romance to untangle and a solid faith thread that weaves it all together. A captivating start to an exciting new series.

    1. I like the way the books in her series come out close together -- especially since there's a bit of carryover between each book. And I just love that setting! Good luck, Trixi!

  10. "WHEN YOU ARE NEAR" sounds like it has it all - inspiration, wild west excitement, showing strength in women friendships, romance and a few villains thrown in for good measure so it's not all sweet and rosy. Sounds like a great series to come and I'd like to get in on the ground floor with the opportunity to read the first book. Do love when a complete within itself books leaves doors open for other great stories. :)

  11. I didn't realize the wild west show was made up of ladies, how interesting. Trick riding is so exciting and I don't think I've read a heroine with this particular skill before. I'm always ready for a new Tracie Peterson series so thanks for the opportunity to start this one.

  16. Just wanted to comment that this is different character/setting background from her typical books - granted, it is historical. I do always enjoy Tracie's books. Brings to mind a slightly similar series written by Lauraine Snelling some years back. Not many have written this type tale. Thanks!
