The Bones Will Speak

GIVEAWAY
RANDOM RETRO READ DAY!
PARKS, CARRIE STUART
THE BONES WILL SPEAK

Forensic artist Gwen Marcey has become the target of a serial killer who believes he's been appointed God's executioner.

In Copper Creek, Montana, Gwen Marcey is struggling to put together her life after cancer and divorce. When her dog retrieves a skull of a murder victim and leads her to the victim's grave, Gwen uses her forensic art ability to identify a serial killer. She is horrified to discover all the victims look like her fourteen-year-old daughter.

The murderer is a "lone wolf," a member of the terrorist group Phineas Priesthood -- and he has a score to settle with Gwen. Unraveling the tangled Christian identity movement, where race-not-grace provides salvation, Gwen is in a frantic rush against time. She must use all her skills to uncover the killer before he can carry out his threat to destroy her and everyone she loves.

My Review:

published in 2015

Carrie Stuart Parks writes from the unique perspective of a forensic artist who has worked with multiple law enforcement agencies -- just like her heroine, Gwen Marcey -- and that brings obvious true-to-life aspects to her novels. They are edgy and gritty and even uncomfortable at times as well as utterly compelling.

I love Gwen! She's a survivor -- of cancer and divorce and parenting a mercurial teen. Her life's a mess and that brings out her inner snark quite often yet she has this core of strength that keeps her fighting to put the pieces of her shattered life back together. Gwen is faced with the audacious challenge to forgive along with the honest struggle that can actually be. So raw and real. No sugar coating here -- either in life or faith. This was an emotionally volatile read for me (especially when her ex turns up -- bah!)

The forensic art details are fascinating and I loved the methodical police procedural aspect to the suspense. So many intricate details made all the more disturbing since they are based on actual cases the author worked on. Definitely a don't-bug-me-unless-the-house-is-on-fire-I'm-reading kind of novel!

  1. Would love to read this! Sounds intriguing & for some reason I didn't even know Carrie S. Parks was writing suspense in 2015. That must've been the year I was living in a cave. ;-)

    1. I'm pretty new to her writing and apparently she has twenty books out -- though some might be on forensic art and drawing. I aim to catch up though. Good luck, Diana.

  13. I have not read any of Carrie's books, but they have long been on my radar. When it comes to reading suspense has not always been my first choice of genres, which is funny because my husband and I love to watch Criminal Minds, NCIS and the like on TV.

    1. This definitely has the same kind of vibe thosee shows have -- not as edgy as Criminal Minds, but close. Good luck, Patty!

  14. I have not read Carrie Stuart Parks, but my husband read the only one I have on my shelf (Formula of Deception). Pretty sure he thought it was good and he's a semi-picky reader :-) So that tells me I need to read her books too, this one sounds intriguing with Gwen being a forensic artist. Such a fascinating career choice.

Would you say this has little to no romance in it, because if so, I know my husband would probably enjoy reading it as well. Maybe this is one for both of us if that's the case....big win/win!!
