HERNE, RUTH LOGAN
A LIGHT IN THE DARKNESS
Priscilla Latham Grant has inherited a lighthouse. So with not much more than a strong will and a sore heart, the recent widow packs her SUV, says goodbye to her lifelong home in Kansas, and heads as far east as one can possibly go without swimming!
On the quaint and historic island of Martha's Vineyard, just off the coast of Massachusetts, Priscilla comes face-to-face with adventure - one that includes rediscovered family, new friends, old homes, and head-scratching mysteries that crop up with surprising regularity. But when her contentment is interrupted by treasure hunters searching for a fabled chest of antique gold coins, the only way to find peace is to solve the mystery herself. Along the way, she realizes it might be than chance that brought her to Martha's Vineyard.
My Review:
Meet Priscilla Latham Grant, the next Jessica Fletcher (Murder She Wrote) -- only without the body count! Ruth Logan Herne has set the stage beautifully in this first book of the multi-authored Mysteries of Martha's Vineyard series. It's like Nancy Drew for grownups!
Love the setting and admit to crushing on the lighthouse! Squeealll!!! Priscilla gets to own a lighthouse! And not just any lighthouse -- one with a hidden treasure attached to it! She's definitely not in Kansas any more! And she might be a reluctant sleuth, but she proves to have a knack for mystery solving.
There's lots to love about Priscilla. She has the courage to leave everything she knows and journey halfway across the country to claim her inheritance. And reconnect with long-lost relatives who may or may not be friendly. Plus she has the kind of sweet tooth I can relate to...a boon to the local bakery! Then there's her soft spot for critters...especially a certain stray dog. That cemented us as besties right there. But it's Priscilla's matter-of-fact faith and open heart that truly won me over.
With her new-found cousins as sidekicks, an intriguing coastguard neighbour and a town full of potential suspects, Priscilla sets out to solve her first mystery...and takes us along for the ride. A light-hearted cozy with spunk.

DeleteI always enjoyed Murder She Wrote, so that comparison bodes well for this book. Quite the contrast for the character, Kansas to Martha's Vineyard relocation. Ruthy is always good, besides! I have never read The First Gift and the Goodreads' reviews are quite compelling. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteYes, I love the Martha Vineyard location. And it's described so well it made me want to go there...and live in a lighthouse. :-) Good luck, CC.

DeleteLove me some Ruthy books!! Never met one that didn't tug at the old heartstrings :-) I've wanted "Refuge of the Heart" way before I discovered her or her books, so that would be the one I'd choose. I think what first drew me to it is that beautiful cover, it's such a peaceful scene isn't it? Thanks for the chance Kav, I'm super excited about today's giveaway.
