My Review:

First off, I have to say how excited I am to find a book that's all about celebrating my introvert-yness instead of trying to banish it! I gave up on self-help books years ago because I'd become overwhelmed by the pressure to transform from introvert to extrovert -- as if that was the only way I could find true happiness and fulfillment. 

I'd try and fail and try and fail and, with each failure, I lost some of myself until I wasn't only an introvert but bordering on becoming a recluse. Really, what would be so bad about living out my life in the company of my non-judgmental book friends? I'll admit that fiction is still one of my coping strategies. There's nothing like a little bibliotherapy to soothe away the harsh demands of the extrovert masses who all think their way is the only way! :-)

And here comes Holley Gerth with the rather stunning declaration: "I am an introvert, and I will imperfectly and courageously offer my strengths of strategic solitude, meaningful connection, true well-being, hard-won resilience, sharp thinking, insightful perception, and intentional energy as I live with purpose and grow for a lifetime." (p 171) And I'm aglow because she gets it. She gets me! And she wants me to still be me! Which doesn't mean I can't learn and grow, just that I can do that while loving on my introvert self!

She gets a bit text-book clinical in places and I'll admit to skimming those sections because -- hello 99% fiction reader here! But there are also plenty of relatable stories and insightful surveys and pointed questions and tons of suggestions and examples to learn by and reflect on. I'm especially excited about the book club questions at the back of the book. Yes, they are great for a group but I'm going to dive in and work through the questions on my own.

Things We Didn't Say

Headstrong Johanna Berglund, a linguistics student at the University of Minnesota, has very definite plans for her future...plans that do not include returning to her hometown and the secrets and heartaches she left behind there. but the US Army wants her to work as a translator at a nearby camp for German POWs,

Johanna arrives to find the once-sleepy town exploding with hostility. Most patriotic citizens want nothing to do with German soldiers laboring in their fields, and they're not afraid to criticize those who work at the camp as well. When Johanna describes the trouble to her friend Peter Ito, a language instructor at a school for military intelligence officers, he encourages her to give the town that rejected her a second chance.

As Johanna interacts with the men of the camp and censors their letters home, she begins to see the prisoners in a more sympathetic light. But advocating for better treatment makes her enemies in the community, especially when charismatic German spokesman Stefan Werner begins to show interest in Johanna and her work. The longer Johanna wages her home-front battle, the more the lines between compassion and treason become blurred -- and it's no longer clear whom she can trust.

My Review:

Highly anticipated. Unexpected. Riveting. Completely different. And so much more it's going to be hard to to justice to this book in a review.

First, you must be a fan of epistolary fiction -- or at least dive in with an open mind -- because the entire novel is made up of letters with the exception of a few newspaper articles. I've been a fan of this genre since reading Daddy-Long-Legs by Jean Webster in fifth grade. But these books are few and far between and the only other one that stands out for me right now is The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows. Loved both those books and the way their stories unfold through letters so if you are also a fan then Things We Didn't Say is a book I think you will enjoy.

In a way, this letter writing approach keeps a reader at arms length since our scope is limited to the letters. We don't have 'real time' scenes with characters interacting or are allowed into the inner thoughts of a protagonist like a traditionally written novel. But there's something deliciously tantalizing about reading a treasure trove of correspondence while fitting the pieces of disparate lives together in order to make a cohesive whole. I kinda felt like part detective and part genealogist.

And the pacing is impeccable. It took me just a few letters to get into the rhythm and then I was compulsively reading all the way. Johanna's on a journey of self-discovery. She isn't always lovable but she grows on you as her world and her choices open up and she comes to terms with some hard truths. And untruths. She's blunt and funny and so very real! One of my favourite quotes: "Real life is dreadfully tedious, the way it interrupts reading." :-)

And there are so many layers to this novel -- addressing all kinds of war issues that I never even thought about. I'm always amazed and appreciative when authors open new aspects of a historical topic I thought I was well-versed in! 

An engrossing inspirational historical fiction debut!

A Castaway in Cornwall

As Laura and a neighbor care for the castaway, the mystery surrounding him grows. He has abrasions and a deep cut that looks suspiciously like a knife wound, and he speaks in careful, educated English, yet his accent seems odd. Other clues wash ashore, and Laura soon realizes he is not who he seems to be. Their attraction grows, and while she longs to return this man to his rightful home, evidence against him mounts. With danger pursuing them from every side, will Laura ever find the answers and love she seeks?

My Review:

Heavy sigh. I read too fast and now it's over and I have that unsettling post-immersive-read melancholy. :-( Honestly, 'coming to' in the 21st century -- especially in this COVID era -- has left me shell-shocked and aching for the simpler times of wreckers and smugglers and shipwrecks and spies. Bwahahahaha!

Every time I read a new Julie Klassen novel I think she can't possibly top it and then the next one comes out and she does! Part of her draw for me is her impeccable research. The author's notes at the back of the book are nearly as fascinating as the novel itself! And then, the way she weaves all those facts into spellbinding fiction sends me into a bibliophile ecstasy that puts me in a speed reading frenzy until it's over all too soon. Hence the aforementioned blues. 

A Castaway in Cornwall is an atmospheric masterpiece of beguiling storytelling. Suspense. Danger. Betrayal. Romance. Oh-la-la -- the way Klassen draws out the mystery of the castaway had me on edge all the way through. Who is he? What is he hiding? Friend or foe? The answers are anything but clear cut and Laura finds herself challenged at every turn. And then there's the romance -- tinged with a certain amount of desperation as it all seems so impossibly doomed. And complicated. 

The author also challenges her characters (and readers) to examine perspectives. Can anything every really be all black or all white? And when one man's loyalty is another's betrayal...how do we determine which one is right? Plus there's a magnificent faith thread woven throughout that deftly ties in with the castaway theme in the title. So many brilliant details that enrich the read and have left me with plenty to ponder.

Stunning. Breathtaking. Unputdownable. You'll feel compelled to rush through, but try to pace yourself and savor every blissful moment.

Her Secret Song

My Review:

Woohoo! This is some grand finale to Connealy's Brides of Hope Mountain series!!! 

While there is an over-arcing villainous plot looming from the first two books, the author has written this final episode in such a way that it could be read as a standalone. BUT, having said that, it would read even better if you're up-to-date with the series and that's because you'll get the inside jokes (the second bible -- snort!) and the over all Warden/Nordegren shenanigans much better. Plus, each book is sheer comedic poetry and so much fun to read! It's well worth savoring each unique story. 

So, there's plenty of action -- this author is particularly brutal to her heroes. Poor Wax! Ouch! Luckily he has Ursula to nurse him back to health and then it's pretty much bedlam and chaos to the nail-biting, stand-up-and-cheer-those-Nordegren-sisters-on blockbuster ending! Yeehaw!!!!

I listened to the audible edition of Her Secret Song narrated by Barbara McCulloh. Her voice is particularly suited for these characters and her dialogue delivery and 'inner thought voices' are spot on.

My Review:

Beth Wiseman novels are a staple in my Amish reading diet and I'm excited about this new series centered around an Amish inn and the meddlesome septuagenarian sisters who run it. 

In fact, I'll happily admit that Esther and Lizzie hijacked the story for me. Their good-natured bickering and well-intentioned romantical interference lightened the more serious aspects of Amos and Naomi's personal lives. Plus, there's a great sub-plot involving the sisters' interactions with a cantankerous neighbour which was hilarious and touching by turns. So, yay for more Esther and Lizzie shenanigans in future books.

I love the art aspect to this romance (and clever title tie-in, by the way.) It's an unusual twist for an Amish novel but provides a unifying backdrop for Amos and Naomi to not only connect with each other but to figure their way out of their grief-stricken state.

Angst and humour abound courtesy of memorable characters and both predictable and unpredictable plot twists. A thoroughly enjoyable second chance at romance love story with a whole lot more besides.

Books will be ordered within a week of receiving your mailing address (or email address for ebooks) and I'll email you to confirm your book is on its way. Give it a full month before inquiring on the status of an order to allow for processing and shipping times.
