TWO STEPS FORWARD
Back and broke in Stoney Ridge, Jimmy Fisher has coasted as long as he could through life on charm, good looks, and deep-set dimples. They always worked just fine for him -- until they didn't. His smile has no effect on the violet-eyed beauty he met at the Bent N' Dent, the one with that stunning horse. She's offered him a job, but nothing else.
The last thing Sylvie Schrock King needs around Rising Star Farm is a grown boy working for her, especially her neighbor Edith's son. The woman holds a serious grudge against Sylvie and her son, and hiring Jimmy Fisher will only fan the flames of Edith's rancor. But Sylvie is desperate for help on the farm, and Jimmy understands horses like no one else.
While Jimmy's lazy smile and teasing ways steal Syvlie's heart, Edith is working on a way to claim her land. Has Sylvie made another terrible mistake? Or is it too late to outfox the fox? More importantly...just who is the fox?
Writing with both wit and warmth, Fisher delivers a supremely satisfying conclusion to the popular Deacon's Family series.
My Review:
I'm quietly sobbing into my lace handkerchief because this is the last book in The Deacon's Family series and I'm not ready to let these characters go! I can only hope that Suzanne Woods Fisher continues the pattern and returns to Stoney Ridge for her next series! You can totally read Two Steps Forward as a standalone but if you've been keeping current with the Deacon's family and the Stoney Ridge community you will be over-the-moon ecstatic with this story.
Luke is continuing to find his bearings as the community's newest deacon. I have to say, I rather like his unique leadership style. :-) For all his personal growth, there's still some of the rapscallion boy inside which keep things interesting. Especially when he's dealing with Jimmy Fisher. Pot meet kettle!
While this is largely Jimmy and Sylvie's story -- a funny, angsty, squirm-with-delight kind of rocky road to romance, we are also treated with Luke and Izzie's continuing love story which touches on some serious subject matter that the author treats with compassion and grace.
Fisher has blessed us with a host of familiar secondary characters who liven things up for Jimmy and Sylvie. Exasperating Edith and boisterous Hank (who made me want to do him bodily harm a time or two) are back to create mayhem and are nicely buffered by Bishop David's wisdom and no-nonsense Fern's pragmatic approach to everything.
A truly scrumptious delight of a read -- well, listen, since I bought the audible version. Rachel Botchan's narration enhanced the storytelling that much more. I'm still in a state of giddy euphoria. Definitely a book I'll want to listen to again.

DeleteI have probably been cooped up inside too long....when I start to very specifically analyze the covers! This caught my attention with the pretty redhead, which is somewhat different (usually a blond or brunette), and we do actually see her face. So many are shots of a meadow with the back/side of the heroine in the foreground. Enjoyed your review. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteHa! I so agree with you. That image you are talking about is a free stock photo which is why it's so popular -- but confusing for readers who see the same cover over and over again and think she's already read the book. Happens to me a lot. Good luck, CC!

DeleteLoved the review. I've wanted to start this series and even purchased the first book recently. With this lock down, I feel like I'm so unfocused and reading less than I would normally. How does that work? Lol. Anyway, I'm still looking forward to this series. Great review.
