Cold Aim

GIVEAWAY
CANTORE, JANICE
COLD AIM

Police Chief Tessa O'Rourke's small town is still reeling from a devastating fire when the FBI asks for help: Could she shelter a witness in a high-profile human trafficking case? Initially reluctant to put the townspeople of Rogue's Hollow at risk, Tess is swayed after she sees Pastor Oliver Macpherson's genuine conviction to rescue those in need, a trait in him she's coming to love more each day.

Tess's fledling faith is tested when crews of workmen from out of town come in to assist with the fire cleanup and she worries that one of these strangers might shine a light on things best kept hidden. Neither she nor Oliver knows that Rogue's Hollow is already home to a suspect from a twenty-five-year-old murder case...and someone is taking cold aim at those Tess is sworn to protect.

My Review:

With the grit and honesty hailing from her twenty-two year police force career, Janice Cantore crafts another page-turning suspense. The third and final book in her Line of Duty series and I think it's the best. Take heart if you haven't read the first two books -- you can definitely enjoy this one as a standalone read but, oh my, if you've been following Tess's career as Rogue Hollow's police chief you will enjoy Cold Aim that much more.

A complex suspense plot with a real sense of urgency made this a breathtaking page-turner (well, compulsive listen, since I enjoyed the audible edition.) So many diverse threads that are gradually woven together into a heart-pounding crescendo at the end. My pulse is still thready from the after effects. :-)

Tess is continuing her faith journey, ready to commit to baptism even as she struggles with some of the nitty-gritty details. Like letting go and letting God. She's been micro-managing her life for so long, bearing the stress of worry and guilt, it's hard for to hand it all over to Him.

And then there's the complication of the police chief being romanced by the pastor much to the dismay of some disgruntled congregants. And Oliver is having difficulties dealing with the dangerous aspect of Tess's job. I'd say the recurring themes of trust and prayer play over and over in both their lives throughout the course of this story. I was as on edge over their romance as  much as I was over the suspense!

The perfect conclusion to an outstanding series.

  10. I own the first book in this series and remember you reviewing it long ago, but I usually wait for all the books in a connected series to be released before I start reading. Especially when they're released a year apart like Cantore's often are. Then I went and forgot about the series, which also happens at times. Bah! I love that you truly enjoyed this last book. It makes waiting and finally getting to them exciting.

    1. I can kind of understand you wanting to read them all at once after the final book releases. It was over a year between book one and two for me but then I grabbed the third one a few days after finishing the second and it was nice to have that continuity -- especially for the way the whole series finishes off. I'm still too impatient (or maybe greedy?) to try waiting years before reading a whole series though. :-) Good luck, Terrill!
